Traverse City Taekwondo Sparring Class - Why Martial Arts Makes You A Better Parent, Spouse and Pers

Martial Arts Sparring Is Great...

It is Thursday night in Traverse City, Michigan. It is 6:28 p.m. in the middle of the Adult Taekwondo Class at the Seung-ni Martial Arts Academy. The students ranging in age from 18 to 57 are busily slipping on their forearm pads, chest protectors and head gear. A sense of excitement is in the air and these Traverse City area residents prepare to engage in Taekwondo sparring training. For most of the month the Seung-ni students have been diligently practicing their kicks, blocks, punches, footwork, combinations and feints all in preparation of this night's class. Sparring is the free flowing application of their martial arts skills against an opponent. It is always the most anticipated and favorite class of the month.

Taekwondo Is An Olympic Sport And The Most Widely Practiced Martial Art In The World...

Taekwondo (a.k.a. Korean Karate) is one of two martial arts in the Olympics along with Judo. The sport of Taekwondo is based on players getting points for landing kicks and punches on an opponent with great skill, technique, accuracy and speed. Taekwondo is the most widely practiced martial art in the world. And, it is also the most popular martial art in Traverse City and Northern Michigan. With Taekwondo's focus on great self defense, fitness, strong character, respect and discipline is is not suprising that it attracts so many kids, teens and adults to its ranks. At the Seung-ni Studio in Traverse City child classes include Little Grasshoppers (ages 18 mos - 3 years), Little Ninjas (ages 3 - 4), Little Dragons (ages 5 - 6), Child Taekwondo (ages 7 - 12) and Teen Taekwondo (ages 13 - 17).

Taekwondo Sparring Offers Many Life Skills...

  1. Self Defense - Learning to kick and punch a moving opponent even with great control helps everyone with their self defense skills. Kicking a bag is great training but cannot compare to a skilled partner who is moving and blocking and counter attacking.

  2. Confidence - Realizing that the hard earned martial arts skills you have learned will protect you in a real life conflict gives the Taekwondo student awesome confidence. And, the more confident you are the better husband, mother and person you become.

  3. Toughness - Every time you spar a Taekwondo student gets kicked and punched. The martial arts students learn first hand that they are tough and can survive such contact.

  4. Controling Temper - Sometimes your partner may kick or punch you too hard by mistake or hit to an illegal area by accident. The Taekwondo student learns to control their energy and not lose their temper. Every spouse and parent can benefit from this.

  5. Release of Energy - Martial arts sparring takes great physical energy and is wonderful for building cardio stamina. At the end of the Taekwondo sparring session students are sweaty, tired and feel great because they have had a cathartic release of energy.

Traverse City martial arts students at the Seung-ni Academy line up to bow out at the end of class. They have kicked and punched, dodged and blocked, sweated and laughed -- but to the person they all leave as a better martial artist and person!
