Northern Michigan Boys and Girls Learn Self-Defense for Kids

In Traverse City, Michigan, sons and daughters can be found training in a small martial arts school called Seung-Ni Martial Arts. Here students learn how to kick, punch, be respectful to others, and defend themselves. But self-defense for a child is different than that for an adult; children, hopefully, only have to worry about other children picking fights with them. Because of this kids will be taught techniques to deal with age appropriate bullies.

Whenever a child gets in a scuffle with another the most common form of aggression is one child hitting the other with his/her hands, usually in the face. Others are pushing and even pinning a victim to the ground. Because of this, child students are taught to first and foremost to keep their hands up to protect their head. Young students are also taught a mixture of standing and ground based grappling techniques to deal with bullies that like to grab.

Much like how the best type of medicine is preventative, the best way to deal with bullies is before they become a problem. The instructors at Seung-Ni teach that children should first ignore a bully or use words first against one. If that fails then they should seek an adult. If the bully persists and is being physicaly agressive then, and only then, can techniques be used against said bully. Students are taught that self-defense is important but if used carelessly that they may end up looking like the bully.
